A New Chapter

Among the towels and soap, my bathroom cupboard now houses...

Chocolate chips!

Now that we have a good potty seat (that I won in a giveaway!) we're starting to think about potty training!
Katie will be 18 months in a week, so she's still a bit young.

I'm looking for training advice. We've already had several successes, (with reward: see above photo,) so I know that she has an idea of what she's supposed to do and she's been quite proud of her accomplishments. :-)

But is 18 months a little young? She is excellent at communicating, yet she doesn't seem to mind too much when her diaper is wet...if I ask her if her diaper is wet, she'll tell me "no!" just to avoid the diaper changing process.
Much too busy for such things, Mama. :-)

I don't mind keeping her in diapers for a good while yet. Should I be encouraging occasional attempts, or is it going to complicate things when I want to get her trained "for real?"

Please share your experience and thoughts!

The other issue is...if she isn't entirely potty-trained before the baby comes, (in about 7 weeks!) do I really want to be in the middle of that process immediately post-partum? Or would it be easier to just change her diapers for a few months along with the Tiny One, and then start in earnest once I'm recovered and life is a little more "normal?"

Besides.

My new Thirsties Duo wraps just came in the mail and I like them! Must we phase her out of diapers already?

Okay. So I'm weird.

Sorry. :-)

USE those new diapers!! Lots of experts say that even if she does begin training now, when the new baby gets here, she will probably regress. Although I have seen incredible successes (we have one mom that was a client at Carol's office who had her's trained at less than 10 months and my mom swears she had us trained by one year back in the late 60's and early 70's) none of my children were ready before they turned 3. My oldest daughter just did it herself in about a week right around her 3rd birthday. One of the things that helped us when we were getting them used to the idea was singing. I know lots of little praise choruses with hand motions and the kids loved sitting in the bathroom with mom and singing!
Okay...so I'm weird, too. LOL

Go with your what your instincts are telling you each day. I would just suggest not putting her out of diapers yet. Check her as often as you have time for and if she's dry let her try going on the potty. If she'll sit and actually go, you've accomplished step one of potty training. The next step will be for her to learn to hold it until you take her but that will come later. The third and final step, which often doesn't come for a long time, is the ability to tell you when she needs to go and/or take herself.

Lucy's ability to use the potty wasn't effected after Esther was born. The only reason I potty trained her though was that she would tell me after she went in her diaper.

At that age I was just taking Mercy at scheduled time--before and after meals and before sleeping. It saved in diaper changes and she loved it. By the time Gilead was born (20 months for her), she was in panties. However, she did regress, which may or may not have had as much to do with having pneumonia as having a baby brother. She regressed again when we moved, and is just successfully being in panties and telling us when she has to go again in the past couple of days. But she just turned 2 in May, she she still isn't that old.

Do what you're comfortable with. Katie's still young, and even if you wait a couple of months after the new one you'll still be doing great.

Speaking as one who started Sam before he was ready (oops), I would recommend waiting to take her out of diapers until she is actually wanting to go and telling you when she needs a change. You'll save yourself a lot of extra work and hopefully make it go much faster when she *is* ready.
I don't think there's anything wrong with encouraging the attempts that she initiates, but I wouldn't push it if she's not wanting to go. :-)
Like Amanda was saying, it's a multiple step process...

Bev says: I wouldn't suggest trying too hard right now, because for the first while it is really YOU that is trained (to remember to take Katie) and while you are nursing right after the mystery child comes you won't need that stress. Reward successes, ignore mistakes, make it fun--not a battle! Have toys or books that she only gets to play with while she is in the bathroom. I don't think there is an designated "ready" time...each child is different. Girls tend to be earlier than boys on the whole, but not always.

Mine are now 20 & 23, so it's been a while for me (potty-training!), but I do remember for some reason it was easier to train our son (our oldest) than his sister. He was training within 2 weeks, right around turning age 2...she however seemed a bit more stubborn, and wasn't fully trained til about age 3!

I first want to say I love your blog design and thanks for the follow! I am following you back. I started potty training my 2 1/2 yr old at 8 months. It was hit and miss. Then at 12 months she was peeing all the time and pooping in the potty all the time with no accidents by 15 months. I was pregnant at this time. I thought she might regress when the new baby came nope! So hit and miss is fine. Just make sure she is comfortable with the potty any bit will help. I so love my cloth! I wouldn't stress though if she regresses but hey if she is interested go for it. I got my 15 month old peeing and pooping in the potty. Yes, it is hit and miss but hey it is accomplishment!

Our daughter is almost 3 (December 6th) and she is dry all night (and really never was a big night wetter even as an infant!), she is still nursing, and goes pee pee no problem, but will ask for a nappy (in fact she'll just go get one - the insert and cover!) when she has to kick it up a notch and do the #2.

The easiest way for her (and they are ALL different, boy - girl etc. she's our 7th and probably the last!) was to just leave her out of anything, no nappy, no imse-vimses - naked times. We had a few accidents (several) but not big because when they realise what's happening they learn to control their valves! It's amazing actually. We merely showed her where the potty was and reminded her about it (but no pressure at all!) and one day she came trotting out with "Mama, Papa I made pee pee!" We all did a big potty dance and a wipe, a flush and a wash of the potty chair. And naturally, she expected the fanfare each time she made pee pee. And she got it. We still praise her for staying dry until she goes to the potty. But she will not use any other potty but her seat, even with a smaller size kid seat on it. We are not in a potty learning rush at all. She came to it about 4 months ago, so around 2 1/2. My older daughter (16 now) learned by 2 and her next up sister (now 23) was not even interested until 2 and half! My boys - all different also, one didn't manage to ever make it in time until he was 4 or 5, but the rest were fairly consistent between 2 and 3.

Like many a wise pp already stated, "follow your instinct." After all you know her best, mama.

Hi! I'm visiting (& following) from Sunday Social Network Exchange.

Newly potty trained kids will often revert to diapers after a new baby is born. Your right, you don't want to be in the middle of potty training with a newborn. Since she is so young, it might be better to wait until after the baby is born to start.
